After a really hectic, not always pleasant year, my husband and I treated ourselves to a trip away.
We decided to go to Birmingham. It’s the city I went to university in and my husband (then boyfriend and fiancé) would visit me most weekends as we struggled through long distance. We haven’t been back since 2011 when I graduated so we thought a nice trip down memory lane and a wonder through the Christmas markets would be a lovely start to Christmas.
We chose The Burlington in the centre of Birmingham as our hotel. They had an offer on called ‘We’ time. This was two nights bed and breakfast, dinner on the first night and prosecco on arrival. We also took advantage of some great prices and booked a suite.
This is the first time I have ever stayed in a suite and wow. I have been missing out.
The room was absolutely gorgeous.
We had a large bedroom with a king sized bed. The view from the room was the New Street Station and it was a gorgeous aspect.
In the next room (yes there were two rooms!) there was a sofa, table, tv in a big room.
The bathroom was really nice with a big walk in shower that was so good.
As we got some hotel credit because I booked directly we used to on breakfast in the room on both mornings. The breakfasts were really tasty and cooked well. The portion sizes were small, but as we pretty much ordered everything on the menu we didn’t go hungry! My only slight critic is that there was never enough butter for the toast. We got one small portion between two people. That’s not enough for me!
After our bottle of prosecco relaxing in the living room we got ourselves dressed up and went for our meal.
It was a Thursday night and the restaurant was very quiet but that meant we got excellent service.
It was a set three course menu with plenty of choice. I went for the risotto and poached egg to start, then turkey for mains and lemon tart with raspberry sorbet for desert. It was all absolutely delicious.
After dinner we went downstairs underneath the hotel the Bacchus Bar for a few drinks before we went around a couple of bars/pubs we used to haunt back in my student days.
I really like Birmingham as a city. It’s quite a compact city centre and everything’s in reasonable walking distance.
We wondered around the Christmas markets after a lazy morning and did some shopping in the bullring.
For lunch we decided to try Five Guys. We’d never been and had both heard good things. I must say I was a bit underwhelmed. It’s really expensive and while the food was good the restaurant was very busy. I just don’t get it!
We used the train to travel from Manchester to Birmingham and the New Street Station is SO different to what I remember. It’s completely renovated and I honestly didn’t know where I was! Luckily the hotel is opposite the station we couldn’t get too lost.
The hotel was beautiful. The service was amazing and I love our room. I will definitely be returning here!
The city is perfect for a city break. Plenty of things to do to please everyone. Definitely a good choice for a city break!
