So, i finally got around to watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi last night. I was really excited to see this film. I LOVE star wars. I had the original episodes 4-6 on video as a child that i would watch and rewatch constantly. Last Christmas my husband tracked down a 2003 box set release that has the original theatrical version of the films in the special features. Just so I dont have to watch the digitally remastered versions.
I want to start off by saying I did like this film. Overall it was great with some really good scenes. However, there were somethings that let it down.
There was alot of comedy. The best way to describe it is episode 7 – the force awakens – was for the long time fans. The ones who adore the original triolgy and suffered through episode 1-3. It felt familiar. It felt like the original star wars come back. This film is for the new fans. It felt like watching a marvel film. Where was tony stark and chris pratt? I half expected Rey to challenge Kylo-Ren to a dance off! I’m not saying I don’t like comic relief, and some parts were really funny. But overall it felt too much.
The scenes with Luke on the island at times made me cringe. We have frog like caretakers. We have Luke milking a large fat animal while it groans as a homage to blue milk. We have these little cute penguin type birds that add nothing to the story except Disney can sell them for a profit. It all got a bit much and I didn’t really enjoy those scenes
The part where Finn and Rose went to a casino to find a master code breaker and came back with someone totally different. It just didn’t cut it for me really. I felt like we were back in Phantom Menace.
There were also some brilliant parts. The scene when the cruiser went to hyper drive to cut through Snoke’s ship. Although it didn’t help that in the pure silence someone loudly went ‘Oooo’ in the cinema while some other idiot went ‘boom’. Come on guys, we paid good money for this.
The fight scenes with Kylo and Rey were excellent. I enjoyed the stand off between the resistance and the first order. The visuals were stunning and I love Hux, he was great.
There were lots of good parts to this film and I did enjoy it. I feel I need to watch it again though as there was so much storyline I’m sure I missed something. But I felt it let itself down in parts. I can understand why some fans weren’t impressed.
