I love a good historical mystery novel so I was instantly drawn to S.G. MacLean’s book Seeker. This is the first of trilogy that I cannot wait to read.
The plot follows the character, Seeker, an investigator for Lord Protector Cromwell during the period of his rule in England.
Cromwell’s right hand man Lord Winter has been murdered. A man has been arrested standing over his body with a knife. But Seeker is convinced the man is innocent and pursues an investigation for the real killer.
We are taken all over London and Oxford as we meet the characters involved in the plot. This is a London teeming with treachery and royalist plots. Seeker must work out who is involved in the murder and what else is bubbling away.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s a mystery novel in Cromwell England, the sort of historical period I enjoy. The characters are interesting and complex. The plot is gripping as you are willing Seeker on to find the real killer and free an innocent man.
I thought Seeker was a really interesting character. He has a lot of history behind him, only some of which is revealed to us. The period of English history is fascinating as Charles I has been executed. The populace has been mobilised to fight against injustice only to be clamped down by Cronwell. It’s a great time period for a mystery series.
I am already looking forward to finishing the trilogy.
