I love the film Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Despite it telling me in the opening title, I hadn’t realised this was based on a book! So I quickly reserved it at the library!
The book follows two sister Gillian and Sally after they go to live with their Aunts after the deaths of their parents. Their Aunts are considered witches in the town and so are Gillian and Sally. We don’t really see much magic in the book, more like a hint of supernatural affinity.
Gillian runs away at 18 to flit from guy to guy and live a wild life. Sally finds love and marries having two girls. Unfortunately her husband dies when the girls are very young.
Sally takes control of her life and moves her and the girls away. Here we watch the girls grow up and Sally try and live a normal life.
After many years Gillian turns up on her doorstep, dead boyfriend in tow in the backseat of her car. Sally helps Gillian bury the body in the backyard and she comes to live with Sally.
Here we see several months of their lives as they grow up, move on, and suffer the consequences of their actions.
This book is completely different to the film. However, they are each excellent in their own way. Often when a book is made into a film one or the other is my favourite. Here I loved both for different reasons. They have completely different plots in many ways.
I adored this book. I read it in one sitting while delayed on the train. The plot was fascinating, the characters brilliant and the writing mesmerising.
I loved watching the development of this family. Falling in love, sisterly bonds and a little accidental death! Each character is very different to the film but in a good way.
This is a fascinating book. If you like a slice of life with a difference then this is the book for you. I definitely recommend it!
