I picked this up on a whim and wow, what a book.
The concept of this book is very simply and utterly brilliant.
It follows Mia, a seventeen year old young girl. Mia is a cellist, she loves her family, she loves her boyfriend Adam, a punk rocker in a band and her best friend Kim.
One winter’s morning her family are driving to visit friends and the unthinkable happens. They are hit by a truck.
Mia wakes up on the floor. She sees her father, dead, her mother dead and then she sees herself. Not dead. Seriously injured.
We follow Mia on her journey to the ICU. She sees her grandparents arrive, her aunts and uncles. Then Kim, and finally Adam. Straight from his show he runs in, desperate to see her.
Mia now must make a choice. Does she go and follow her family or does she stay?
Over several hours she remembers her family and their good times. She remembers meeting Kim, how hate turned to fierce friendship. She remembers Adam and how she fell in love with him.
We watch with her as her family wait and pray for a miracle. Her grandfather whispers to her that he wants her to stay more than anything, but if she needs to go he’ll understand. Adam makes a daring break in to the ICU to be with her.
Mia ways her decision. To stay or to go.
There is something comforting in that. To go down as a family. No one left behind.
ll I have to say about this book is wow. Such a stunningly beautiful portrayal of a devastating situation and how it affects everyone. And the heart breaking decision Mia has to make. The consequences of which will change lives forever.
If you haven’t read this book, do it now. You will not regret it.
