For some reason I totally missed this release by Benedict Jacka! It does mean I have a sorted wait for the next instalment 🙂
This plot picks up where Burned left off. Alex and Anne are now in the control of Richard. Alex is sent off to work for Morden, the first Dark Mage representative on the council and is made a Keeper. Anne is told to work with the council team of healers.
Both are reeling from the betrayal of the council that led to their current predicament. They are confused by Richard’s relatively hands off approach and worried about what he is planning.
Alex is sent on various missions for Morden while he tries to work out what he is planning. All the while he is challenged by his friends to stop simply reacting to the current problem but to consider the future.
Alex has to make decisions and think about the consequences of those decisions.
This was a really great addition to the Alex Versus series. In the book we see maturity and development of all the main characters.
Alex starts to think about how he is going to manage the problem with Richard on a larger scale that simply the next crisis. He begins to develop his own powers and take control of his destiny.
Luna also develops during this book. She lost herself when Alex and Anne left. Suddenly she was a mage on her own with no idea what to do and she really struggled with that. But with a bit of a talking to from Alex she pulls herself together and takes charge of her own future. It’s really nice to see Luna grow over the whole series.
Anne has also changed, but not necessarily for good. After a kidnapping from the council she is badly hurt. Hurt in a way we’re not sure she can come back from this. She needs Alex but he’s not taking that step forward. I think we’ve got a lot to see from Anne in the future. It may not all be good.
Another fantastic book from Benedict Jacka. We’re seeing some great character development and storyline. I am really looking forward to the next instalment.
