Welcome to the first instalment of book club! For my first review I am going to look at a series, rather than a specific book – the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. The latest of instalment, the Hanging Tree is now available.
The story follows Peter Grant, a new constable PC who ends up drafted to the Folly, the magical division of the Met, after he sees a ghost during a murder investigation. This begins a wild ride through the magical underground of London and beyond as he starts his apprenticeship as wizard with DC Nightingale. After the second world war decimated the wizarding ranks of England Peter is the first official apprentice, and he is thrust into his role of wizarding police. Many adventures and mystery ensue as Peter gets to grip with this new world of magical creatures, goddesses and fae.
Each book has a distinct story line with a major story line running through all the books. As Peter learns more about the magical world the story lines get more intricate and gripping. If you’re looking for a new modern crime series with a magical twist this is definitely the series to get your teeth into.
